Park screening sought for Women’s World Cup

FOOTBALL fans and players should be able to take up a seat at Granville Park to watch the Matilda’s take on football’s best in the FIFA Women’s World Cup later this year.

Cr Ola Hamed has asked the council to investigate how it could facilitate the public screening of all the Women’s World Cup matches involving the Australian Matildas.
Cr Hamed said as one of the host nations, it was “fitting that we screen all the matches” and celebrate the growth of women’s sport and the important role women play.
“The screenings offer an opportunity for those who can’t get to the games to come together as a community in a safe space to share the excitement on a large screen,” she said.
“Cumberland loves soccer and I look forward to roaring for the mighty Matildas at Granville Park.”
And it won’t just be the Australian team that residents will be cheering on.
“Our local people are from so many different countries and they will be able to watch the teams of the countries that also hold their heart,” Cr Diane Colman said.
“So many people in the local area can’t wait for it. It’s a fantastic way of building a sense of community.
“Maybe one of the girls watching at one of our live sites will be the next Sam Kerr. It’s certainly on the cards… we have some amazing women playing soccer in various associations.”
The World Cup will be held from July 20 to August 20 in Australia and New Zealand, making it the first-ever co-hosted Women’s World Cup and the first time in the Southern Hemisphere.
