Pair on song for 60 years

BIRRONG residents for 58 years, Gordon and Judy Learmonth will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on Thursday, May 23.

Meeting as teenagers at Alexandria Spinning Mills, Judy was a comptometrist and Gordon was assistant accountant.
After a four-year courtship, they were married at Kingsgrove Methodist Church, with both being confirmed Christians.
Gordon was also a keen golfer, a junior champion at Strathfield and later lowered his handicap to three with a social golf club, while Judy was an enthusiastic tennis player and together with Gordon, played socially and competitively at Berala Carramar District for many enjoyable years.
The couple have three daughters – Cheryl, Debra and Sharyn – and four grandchildren plus an imminent great grandchild.
In addition to her parenting duties, Judy continued to be involved in the commerce and accounting fields as a book-keeper machinist, pay mistress, telephonist and typist.
Gordon is a chartered public account (since 1967) plus a chartered secretary (since 1972) and although retired in 2001, has remained honorary treasurer for Bankstown District Uniting Church since 1991 as well as continuing auditing involvement which he enjoys.
Keen singers, they have performed Handel’s Messiah in Sydney Town Hall for over 50 years, with Judy who is also a dancer, enjoying many years in stage productions.
Both life members of Bankstown City Choir, Judy has also been organist at Sefton Uniting Church for many years and also co ordinates the Greenacre Seniors Entertainers Group.
After both being finalists in the ‘Voice of the Ocean’ competition on previous cruise trips, they are planning to celebrate their anniversary on an eight-day Pacific Islands cruise.
