Over 55s side one of Holroyd’s most successful

HOLROYD Rangers Soccer Club Over 55s squad is not only one of its most successful, after already securing the 2024 Minor Premiership with four rounds to go, they are its most multicultural line-up.

Players of the 16-member squad come from Syria, Turkiye, Chile, Peru, Uruguay, Netherlands, Italy and Malta with others Australian-born but as coach Eric Scicluna says, they’re all Aussie now and love their soccer.
He said most of the players have been involved with soccer all of their lives and half the squad had previously been playing for years in the Over 45s side.
“We have a couple of 60-year-olds but those players are fitter than me,” he said with a laugh, adding he was not old enough to play in the squad yet.
“They’re an amazingly strong team and train with the Over 45s once a week; they’re fast, on the ball and extremely versatile and the goalkeeper has played in that position for many years, there’s none better at defence.
“We’ve got the semis coming up on August 10 and we’re confident since the smallest margin we’ve won by this season is 2-1. If we keep going the way we are, we’ll make it to the grand final at the end of August, that’s the plan.”
