The programs have been well received with record attendance – from bus trips across NSW including trips to Cronulla, Hawkesbury and the Central Coast, to a Foodies Club, over 55s health and wellness opportunities and technology webinars.
Resident Gloria Genner who enjoys the bus trips, said the program was beneficial.
“I definitely felt isolated during Covid lockdowns, if I wanted to go out it was very hard,” she said.
“These programs suit my lifestyle as I like to get out of Sydney and see something different.
“I love the bus trips, they pick me up from my house and drop me off, I love going to new places.”
Mayor Lisa Lake says the council is committed to providing opportunities for seniors to become more active and socially connected.
“Although the pandemic impacted on all of us, our older generation who tend to be at risk of experiencing severe illness, were the most affected in terms of mental health and wellbeing and suffering from social isolation,” she said.
“We have a growing population of older residents in Cumberland with more than 15 per cent aged over 60, so it’s really important the council provides social programs that are inclusive and suit the culturally diverse demographic.”
Along with more programs starting such as Tai Chi classes, the council can also assist with shopping and home delivered meals.
