Its powerful combination of words, metaphor and meter, help us better express ourselves and make sense of the world and our place in it.
With this mind, Auburn Poets & Writers (APW) have been hosting a free open mic event in WestWords Parramatta on the fourth Monday of the month (next on April 24) from 8pm and invite more budding poets, storytellers or creatives to give it a go.
APW coordinator Danny Gardner says the open mic event is where poets and musicians from anywhere can come and see what APW does – as well as presenting their material to a new audience.
Formed in 2005 and taking part in many writers festivals since then, including at the upcoming Sydney Writer’s Festival on May 23, APW used to meet at Auburn Library before joining under the WestWords’ umbrella in 2020.
“The majority of the group’s members of course still live in Auburn,” Danny said.
“They are determined to make WestWords a one-stop shop for poetry and music of all kinds and we would love for others, no matter sex, age or cultural background, to come along and join; it’s always such a fun night.”

Open mic night to unleash inner poet
ALMOST like a therapy session, poetry can provide comfort and boost mood during periods of stress, trauma and grief.
