Club President Willy Trostel said the move had been 18 months in the making but they now had facilities more in keeping with the aspirations of the club in promoting and “providing the opportunity to play rugby in an area where the game has little exposure”.
“We are basically in a rugby league stronghold but moving to Riverwood has connected our club to a vast area to the west and north-west of our new home,” he said.
The club offers minis (mixed gender) from age U6s to U10s and boys teams up to U18s.
They also field senior men’s teams in the NSW Suburban Rugby Union competition and have a strong commitment to fostering the development of girls’ rugby with the largest contingent of junior girls playing the game in the Southern Districts area.
Willy said the relocation had already seen an expansion of playing numbers by 15 per cent across all areas of the club in just a few weeks of announcing the move.
As a precursor to the permanent move, Oatley successfully hosted the U16s State Cup at Riverwood Park over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend in 2022 – the first time this prestigious carnival had been held in the south-west of Sydney.
They also saw the Oatley girls strutting the club colours at the new venue for the first time.
Oatley hosted the final round of the Sydney Junior Rugby Union girls’ rugby sevens competition as its first event at Riverwood.
