NSW Tonga Sports launches to boost youth opportunities

USING sport as a way to bring the Tongan community together and teach youth about culture, the NSW Tonga Sports Association, formerly NSW Tongan Rugby Union, has launched at a dinner featuring traditional performances at Carnarvon Golf Club in Lidcombe.

Former Super Rugby players organised the event with Sam White saying their aim was to provide educational and sporting opportunities on and off the field.
“We are not playing in a regular competition in any code but will be sending a team of U18 girls to the Pacific Youth Cup in New Zealand in November and are seeking out other opportunities in Oztag, netball and basketball,” he said.
“We are diversifying our sports program to be more inclusive of other sports and provide pathways, including work placement, for our young men and women to represent our community.”
Sam said they were also actively seeking a sporting hub to call home.
“We want to base ourselves in western Sydney and will be discussing opportunities that may exist through the council,” he said.
Now established as a not-for-profit organisation, they are also seeking grants and donations to get more programs underway.
