‘Nowruz’ New Year party

CELEBRATING the Iranian New Year, also known as the Persian New Year, Cumberland Council is hosting a ‘Nowruz’ community festival with a line-up of fantastic food, live entertainment and cultural activities at the Granville Centre this Saturday evening.

With the party getting underway from 5.30 to 9.30pm, entertainment will kick off with traditional Iranian dancing followed by DJ Allen, a professional Iranian-Australian DJ, before Arab Theatre Studio’s ‘Dandana and Friends’ light up the stage with Arab classics including ‘Oum Kalthoum’ and many modern Middle Eastern artists.
Their amazing musician line-up includes Mohammed Lelo (qanoon), Mustafa Tayyar (violin), Adem Yilmaz (percussion), Hussein Kahil (vocals), Hassan Izeldin (vocals), Yacine Rabhi (oud) and Fethi Rabhi (percussion).
Hussein Kahil said: “Ensemble Dandana experiments in classical and contemporary Arabic music performance, bringing together an eclectic mix from South West Asia and North Africa.
“Dandana means ‘to jam or to strum a few notes’. The curation and programming reflect the expansive musical influences and the joyful camaraderie between members.”
Dandana’s performance will be followed by One Umbrella’s Naveed Anil performing a variety of Afghan songs, the Austolian Dance Company featuring traditional Turkish dancing and roving Arabian drummers.
Attendees can also grab a bite from a range of food trucks, take part in workshops and discover the traditional table arrangement featuring seven items symbolising renewal.
Mayor Lisa Lake said: “Nowruz is a significant time of year for our community. It focuses on cultural diversity and friendship among peoples and different communities.”
