Now game on for any aspiring fans of chess

IT can ward off dementia, improve the symptoms of ADHD in children and boost your intelligence, empathy and memory – so why aren’t we all playing chess regularly?

Long-term Revesby Workers’ member Paul Sillato enjoys darts and lawn bowls but is keen to start a social chess competition on Sundays, 2-4pm, in a six-week trial starting from May 2.
“In the days before computers and smartphones, most of us used to play chess, either with siblings, friends or at school,” he said.
“But technology seems to have taken over many of life’s simple pleasures and I thought I would try and help revive the lost art of playing chess in the Canterbury Bankstown district.
“Chess is fantastic for kids but especially older people as it’s a wonderful tool against ageing and getting rid of the mental cobwebs.
“The game promotes logical thinking and problem solving as well as teaching people to think deeply.”
On offer for adults and also juniors if they are accompanied by an adult, Paul said the games would be purely social and to build skills in a friendly environment.
“There are limited chess boards available so please bring a board just in case extras are required,” he said.
“I’m hoping everyone will come along and enjoy something a bit different on a Sunday afternoon.”
