New library wins top prizes at 2020 Architecture Awards

ONE of the biggest projects in the council’s history, Marrickville’s magnificent new library has taken out the prestigious NSW Premier’s Prize at the 2020 NSW Architecture Awards.

It also won the Milo Dunphy Award for Sustainable Architecture, the People’s Choice Award For Life in 2020, and an award for public architecture.
When Marrickville Library and Pavilion opened in August 2019, it represented a new era in library services for the Inner West, all housed in a beautiful structure incorporating the heritage listed buildings of the old Marrickville Hospital.
According to the NSW Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects: “The project represents a vision for the future of public architecture, as a facilitator of community engagement … and a celebration of its historic and natural environment.”
Mayor Darcy Byrne said: “This beautiful public facility is more than a library, it’s a town square for Marrickville helping to bring the whole community together.”
