New library opening wows thousands

THOUSANDS of people poured through the doors at the official opening of the new Marrickville Library on Saturday.

It was a day of shows for all the family, art tours, story times and a chance for everyone to share their memories of the old Marrickville Hospital.
Mayor Darcy Byrne said the community is rightly very excited about what has been made available to them.”

“Thank you and congratulations to council staff on delivering such a magnificent facility and a successful opening,” he said.
The library was built on the site of the old Marrickville hospital and integrates contemporary design and technology with the original, conserved heritage elements of the main hospital building.
The library has space for 85,000 books and includes a landscaped outdoor garden, a children’s playground, a coffee shop, study rooms and conference facilities. There is even a robotic collection available to borrow.
