Filmed across two days last February, the story depicts the main character doing some research at the library’s computers before she is chased onto the street by her nemesis.
Though written by best-selling American author Karin Slaughter and set in the deep south, the lockdowns prevented filming to take place there and so producers decided to weave their magic here with Australian actresses Toni Collete and Bella Heathcote.
So that the set appeared authentic, light switches, computers, the rooms and even cars on the street were ‘Americanised’ but there was no hiding the Guildford Library building, a classic 1970s piece of architecture.
How well do you actually know someone?
With that question in mind, the dark tale explores the relationship between ‘Andrea’ and her mother ‘Laura’, the small town, speech therapist mum who loves her quiet life.
As they celebrate her 31st birthday at a local diner, Andrea is left shaken after her mother intervenes in a violent gun attack.
Laura is hailed as a hero but the footage goes viral and 24 hours later she is in hospital, shot by an intruder, who’s spent decades trying to track her down.
As Andrea begins to gather the pieces of Laura’s past to uncover the real identity that her mother has forsaken long ago, what other truths will she find?
Already a winner among book fans, a library spokesperson said the story was not your run-of-the-mill mystery.
“It’s a wonderful, gripping, thrilling story, I thoroughly enjoyed it,” she said.
‘Pieces of Her’ will debut on Netflix on March 4.
