Data released from the Ageing and Disability Commission (ADC), has shown a 55.3 per cent increase in reports about older people and adults with disability experiencing abuse, neglect and exploitation in their family, home and community.
Commissioner Robert Fitzgerald said there was also a 25.3 per cent increase in calls to the Ageing and Disability Abuse Helpline.
“We’re getting more calls because there’s greater awareness about abuse in the community and people know that there is a Helpline that can provide them with information and support, or to make a report,” he said.
“You don’t need to be an expert in detecting abuse; you just need to recognise the signs and talk with someone about your concerns, and give the Ageing and Disability Abuse Helpline a call.”
For information, support or to make a report, call the Ageing and Disability Abuse Helpline on 1800 628 221.
‘Neglect, exploitation’ reports skyrocket by over 55 per cent
WITH up to 14 per cent of older people affected by some type of abuse, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) this Wednesday (June 15) is a reminder that we must eradicate this scourge from our society.
