NAIDOC Week events on

NAIDOC Week (National Aboriginals’ and Islanders’ Day Observance Committee) is an Australian observance lasting from the first Sunday in July until the following Sunday (July 7-14).

It’s a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
You can show your support for the initiative by getting involved in local events.
• Monday, July 8, 2-3pm: Ochre and Symbol Storytelling at Central Gardens Nature Reserve, Merrylands West – Children aged five to 12 years, are invited to discover the colours and uses of ochre and its use and symbolism in traditional storytelling. Free.
• Tuesday, July 9, 8.30-4.30pm: Tribal Warrior Cruise – seniors (over 65 or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders over 50 and not accessing seniors and disability services) can jump aboard the Mari Nawi (Big Canoe) and learn the traditional culture of one of the most beautiful harbours in the world during a two-hour cruise. Enjoy cultural performances and hear stories of the Gadigal, Guringai, Wangal, Gammeraigal and Wallumedegal people of Sydney Harbour and learn the Aboriginal names and meanings of significant Sydney landmarks, before stepping ashore on Be-lang-le-wool (Clark Island). Pick up at Auburn Centre for Community at 8.30am and Holroyd Gardens at 9am. Cost: $20.
• Wednesday, July 10, 10am-3pm: Community event at Central Gardens, Merrylands West – all ages are invited to celebrate NAIDOC Week with fun activities at an outdoor event where you can shop for Indigenous art and jewellery at the community stalls and learn about government and community support services available.
