Mosque leader thanks ‘generous community’

A FOOD stall fundraiser on offer at Auburn Gallipoli Mosque on Friday, has raised more than $10,000, with all proceeds going to support earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria.

As well as the fundraiser which brings the total raised by the Mosque to nearly $250,00, organisers were also kept busy last week receiving 60 boxes of sleeping bags and blankets from charity Humanity First and eight more pallets of tents, blankets and sleeping bags from Rode Microphones in Silverwater along with donations from individuals
After the 40ft shipping container left the Mosque on Monday morning bound for Turkey, Mosque General Manager Osman Goreli thanked the community for their generosity.
“We received such wonderful support and love from everyone – non-Muslims, Muslims, people of all ages, cultures and backgrounds,” he said.
“We are just so proud of our local community.”
With the death toll now over 46,000, futures shattered and history and homes destroyed, Osman said it was still important to dig deep.
“All donations, no matter how big or small are gratefully accepted,” he said.
You can donate in person or online: gallipolimosque.org.au.
Cumberland City Council has also voted to send $10,000 to the Red Cross Turkey-Syria Earthquakes Appeal.
The donation will be sourced from the council’s Emergency Relief Fund.
“The Cumberland Council area is home to over 7,500 people with ancestry connected to Turkey and approximately 2,000 people with ancestry connected to Syria,” Mayor Lisa Lake said.
“On behalf of the council, we send our sincerest condolences to those both within Cumberland and overseas who have lost loved ones.”
