More invited to have paddle, try dragon boating

DRAGON boat racing was a traditional Chinese paddling activity for over 2,000 years and began as a modern sport in Hong Kong in 1976.

Getting on board the popular sport, Sandy Point Dragon Boat Club was established in 2004 and in its early years serviced the small community of Sandy Point, with the new water sport an opportunity for local residents who were generally of retirement age.
Sandy Point has now grown into a vibrant club with over 80 members across all ages with the option of taking part in State, national and international regattas.
Members from 12 years and older now come from both sides of the Georges River, with the club located on the southern side of the river and paddling as far west as the M5 bridge and as far east as the Alfords Point bridge.
For convenience, paddlers can also be picked up from the Picnic Point side of the river.
Club chairman Dave McFadden invites people of all ages to give dragon boat racing a go.
“Dragon boating is an exciting water team sport for people of all ages, where technique and timing are just as important as fitness and strength,” he said.
“If you enjoy working as a team, love being on the water and are interested in improving your overall fitness, Sandy Point Dragons is the club for you.
“The weather is warming up, the racing season will be starting soon, so now is an ideal time to get involved and give dragon boating a try.”
