More CCTV to nab dumpers

CANTERBURY Bankstown Council has dumpers in its sights with the expansion of its camera surveillance in dumping hotspots.

In the latest stage of the “Eyes on It” program, the council has installed five new high-tech CCTV cameras in a number of locations across the City in an effort to prevent illegal dumping and promote cleaner streets.
The surveillance cameras will operate around the clock to assist council officers in identifying offenders.
Mayor Bilal El-Hayek (pictured with staff) said the cameras were there to act as a deterrent and ensured our streets stayed clean.
“The council has a zero tolerance for dumpers who just want to cut corners,” he said.
“We want to stamp out this illegal behaviour by a handful of people who have no respect for the wider community.
“The message is simple: you are being watched and if anyone is considering illegally dumping materials, you will be caught.”
The expanded camera network follows the council’s concerted efforts to tackle illegal dumping and promote use of their booked bulky waste service, which has led to a 38 per cent reduction in illegal dumping and a 45 per cent increase in booked clean-ups across priority areas over the past 18 months.
Dedicated Clean City Illegal Dumping Prevention Officers are targeting problem areas with education, engagement and enforcement to encourage residents to do the right thing and book in a bulky waste collection.
Placing items on the kerbside without a booked clean-up, can attract a fine of up to $4,000 for individuals and $8,000 for businesses.
Residents are encouraged to report instances of illegal dumping online at cb.city/ReportIt or by calling the council on 9707 9000.
