Minns promise for new school

A NEW primary school will be built in Lidcombe’s Carter Street Precinct if Labor wins the State election.

NSW Labor Leader, Chris Minns was joined by State MP for Auburn, Lynda Voltz and Parramatta City Mayor, Donna Davis at the Lidcombe site to announce the commitment, which included a co-located public preschool.
A school site was identified by the Department of Planning for the precinct which will feature up to 6,200 new homes with a mix of townhouses and apartments but the State Government has yet to fund the proposal.
Ms Voltz said for far too long residents have been sending their children to overcrowded, at capacity schools while the NSW Government fails to build promised new ones.
“They are pretty good at getting high rise buildings completed, but when it comes to the infrastructure to support these dwellings, this government has failed miserably,” she said.
Mr Minns said the new school is urgently needed to take pressure off Newington Public School, which is over capacity with 18 demountable classrooms on its playground.
“Growing communities need schools – and that’s exactly what my team is focussed on,” Mr Minns said.
“Too often infrastructure lags population growth, leaving families waiting years for schools, parks and public transport. A government I lead will aim to address the current government’s poor planning.”
The masterplan for the Carter Street Precinct also includes three hectares of open space plus four pocket parks, a community centre and the widening of busy Hill Road.
Parramatta City Lord Mayor, Donna Davis said it is fantastic news for families, with thousands of residents already calling the precinct home.
