Military History Prize worth $10,000 launch

PASSIONATE about preserving our past, Cumberland RSL sub-branch vice president and historian Ron Inglis has praised the launch of the inaugural $10,000 Anzac Memorial Trustees Military History Prize.

Part of the NSW Premier’s History Awards, the History Prize has been established to highlight the importance of recording our military history to remember veterans.
Veterans Minister David Elliott says capturing our military history is vital to ensuring future generations are educated on the service and sacrifice of Australians in armed conflict.
“This prize is not only an important acknowledgement of the work which is already being done to record the events and stories of those who served in conflict and peacekeeping missions but also provides an avenue for that work to be shared more widely,” Mr Elliott said.
Mr Inglis said it was a great move and should encourage those with an interest in military history to apply.
The ’Auburn Remembers’ author said Cumberland sub-branch received an Armistice Centenary grant in 2018 to help bring about the book which includes information about all those appearing on the Auburn War Memorial.
He said that his second book, ‘Auburn Anzacs’, which was still in the works, took the first book a step further and included more details on the individuals and information on their descendants.
“I’ve tracked down several families and have more to go,” he said.
“I don’t do it for any money, being a retired school teacher, I just really enjoy the research and bringing history to life but I might check out this opportunity myself.”
Entries close on April 6 with winners announced in September 2023.
