Meals on Wheels longest server awarded ‘Local Woman of Year’

A MEALS on wheels volunteer for almost 50 years, and former Commonwealth Games official, Lynette Quinn (OAM) has been awarded the Bankstown Local Woman of the Year award.

State MP for Bankstown, Tania Mihailuk, congratulated the Bass Hill resident for “her outstanding commitment to the community, in particular her work with the Meal on Wheels, where she has been an active member for 48 years” – and is now its longest serving volunteer.
Surprised by the win, Ms Quinn said being a volunteer was rewarding and enjoyable.
“Dad and Mum were always involved in the community, and that’s where it comes from,” she said.
Even during the Covid-19 pandemic, Ms Quinn helped Meals on Wheels deliver food to the vulnerable and isolating residents.
She was also a very active member of the local, state and national netball associations, officiating at three Commonwealth Games: Manchester 2002, Melbourne 2006 and New Delhi 2010. In 2010, she was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for her service to netball.
Ms Mihailuk congratulated her on receiving this prestigious award which recognises her amazing commitment to the community, despite her own personal challenges.
“Ms Quinn worked tirelessly to ensure isolated residents were provided with a meal throughout the challenging period of the Covid-19 pandemic,” she said.
“She has demonstrated a lifelong commitment in supporting our most vulnerable community members.”
