Mayor to sleep rough to boost homeless help

CUMBERLAND Mayor Lisa Lake (pictured) will be sleeping rough for one night to gain an insight into the realities of homelessness and raising funds to support Vinnies’ homelessness services which will help provide food, accommodation and essential services to people experiencing and or at risk of homelessness.

She will be taking part in her first Vinnies CEO Sleepout at the White Bay Cruise Terminal this Thursday.
Every night, more than 122,000 Australians experience homelessness.
The Mayor, who will be joined by the council’s General Manager, Peter Fitzgerald, said they were aiming to raise awareness of homelessness and gain a new perspective from others who were experiencing homelessness.
“I hope that it will encourage others to take part in raising awareness for homelessness and that they too can contribute and have an impact on this important cause,” she said.
According to 2021 Census data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 5,596 people in Cumberland are considered homeless, and this includes not just people sleeping out and in tents and cars, it also includes people living in shelters, boarding houses, other temporary lodgings and people living in overcrowded dwellings. Statistics show that women over the age of 55 most at risk of experiencing homelessness in Australia.
“Homelessness is an important issue in our community and the council is committed to supporting social services, working alongside community organisations and advocating with the NSW Government to help reduce homelessness in Cumberland,” Mayor Lake said.
