Mayor hit disgrace

A MAN has been charged after Cumberland Mayor Steve Christou was allegedly attacked outside a polling booth during council elections last Saturday.

Police were called to the polling booth at a school on Fowler Road, Merrylands, about 5pm, after Mr Christou was allegedly threatened and assaulted by an unknown man, who left the scene.
A 29-year-old man was arrested later that night at Merrylands and charged with common assault.
Mr Christou appears set to retain his seat for the Our Local Community party in the Granville ward, along with Labor’s Ola Hamed and Joseph Rahme.
He said while “things were looking good, there is still counting to go”.
And if he does get re-elected, he will be pushing the council to “bring the next election in house”.
“People are over this local government Covid election… the way it was run was absolutely pathetic,” he said.
“How can you have 30,000 people at a soccer game but volunteers have to stand 100 metres from a booth to hand out ‘How to vote’ information. It’s ridiculous.”
Labor’s Kun Huang who is leading the race in the Regents Park Ward said it was still “a bit early to call”, but was “pretty happy with the way things are at the moment”.
“It looks like I’ll be bringing my running mate Sabrin Farooqui with me (onto the council),” he said.
“With the third place undecided, potentially I could have my full team with me.
“It shows people want change.”
Leading the race in the other wards are: South Granville – Labor’s Glenn Elmore, Mohamad Hussein and Our Local Community’s Paul Garrard; Greystanes – Labor’s Diane Colman, Independent Greg Cummings and Our Local Community’s Eddy Sarkis; and Wentworthville – Michael Zaiter and Labor’s Suman Saha.
The NSW Electoral Commission will not begin declaring any candidates elected until December 20.
