Matildas waltz in

FOLLOWING the Matildas’ heart-stopping win over France in the Quarter Final of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023, thousands of enthusiastic fans will pack Stadium Australia on Wednesday to cheer them on in the next knockout round.

The Matildas will face England (August 16) at Stadium Australia at 8pm, and with the match already a sell-out, the live broadcast screens in Cathy Freeman Park will again be activated. It will be one of many venues, including a live site at Merrylands Civic Square, clubs and pubs, which will be screening the action.
Premier Chris Minns said the Matildas’ run had “captured the nation”, with their Quarter Final win the highest-rating TV event since Cathy Freeman’s 400m gold medal run at the Sydney Olympic Games.
“This is a once-in-a-generation moment in Australian sport, and I want as many people as possible to be able to share in the excitement of the match in front of big screens with a community atmosphere,” he said.
Minister for Women, Jodie Harrison, said the team had not just broken records for women’s sport but have etched an indelible new milestone into the Australian history books.
“Every achievement on that football pitch helps achieve goals for girls and women in sport for the long term,” she said.
