Born in Campsie on February 22, 1922 – the same year that Tutankhamen’s tomb was discovered, prohibition made home brewing illegal and the Charlestown was all the rage, Marjorie recalls a happy childhood and meeting her husband Edwin (Bob) at the age of 15 when he first offered to carry her books home from school.
They married in 1943, produced Gary and Ross and travelled extensively around Australia, New Zealand, Europe, USA, Canada and the Pacific Islands before Bob passed away in 2000.
Working for a pharmaceutical company before having children, Marjorie was also a volunteer for many years at the local RSL, Masonic Lodge, Legacy, knitting for Bear Cottage and more.
She still enjoys knitting and reading but her greatest passion is her family – she has three grandchildren, Sacha, Nicole and Craig, and seven great grandchildren.
Sacha fondly remembers her grandparents taking holidays and travelling to be with their grandchildren while her parents worked.
“We are all very close to Nan and extremely proud of her,” Sacha said.
Describing her Nan as extremely family oriented and a great cook, Sacha said was very happy living independently but with support from son Ross.
“We are very lucky to have her with us still and when we ask her what her secret is to living so long and so well, she just simply says, ‘always try to be a good person’,” Sacha said.
