Threatened officers in stab frenzy

POLICE will “leave no stone unturned” in their investigation into the shooting death of a man who allegedly threatened officers at Auburn Police station, minutes after he carried out a frenzied stabbing attack on a cleaner at Auburn Railway Station.

The 32-year old, who had been living in Auburn since 2019 on a Student’s Visa, allegedly stabbed a 28-year-old at Auburn Railway Station just after midnight last Tuesday, before being shot twice in the chest when he confronted and threatened officers with a knife five minutes later at the nearby police station.
Officers immediately performed first aid on the man, who wasn’t known to police, until paramedics arrived but he died a short time later.
The cleaner was in a stable condition.
Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith, Commander South West Metropolitan Region said he fully supported the officers, “it’s traumatic, it’s a significant incident at one of our police stations”.
He said the officers were responding to the stabbing at the railway station when they were confronted outside the police station by the 32-year-old armed with knife, and retreated back into the station.
“He launched at and tried to attack the two officers,” Comm Smith said.
“CCTV footage is highly concerning.
“The cleaner was going about his duties, he was set upon without warning.”
He said the officers would get significant counselling support.
A critical incident team comprising officers from State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the discharge of a police firearm.
