Canterbury Bankstown Council is offering eligible residents a $500 rebate if they install solar panels at their homes, with the aim of reaching a goal of 50 per cent of single-unit houses being dependent on solar energy by 2036.
With almost 18,000 solar panel systems already installed, Canterbury Bankstown is well on its way to becoming a more sustainable City.
The first resident to receive the rebate under the new scheme, Unang Halim of Panania, said he installed a six-kilowatt solar panel system to help slash his electricity bill.
“The main reason I switched to solar is because the trend of the electricity cost will go up and up,” Mr Halim said.
“I think this technology is so advanced and affordable. And it can be used as an alternative to fossil fuels.
“It may also help to reduce the climate change effects, so it’s a win-win solution.”
Canterbury Bankstown Mayor Bilal El-Hayek inspected Mr Halim’s new panels and encouraged more locals to get involved and make the change.
“It’s a great initiative designed to help our community move towards a greener future,” Mayor El-Hayek said.
“In our current economic environment where we’re all focused on saving where we can, we want to help make it easier for our residents to make sustainable choices.”
