Loved story characters brought to life in Book Week celebration

AN author visit was the highlight of the week when Punchbowl Public School took part in week-long Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Book Week celebrations.

Along with engaging activities promoting reading and literature, the Book Character Parade saw the playground bursting with vibrant colourful book character costumes.
From old favourites to the more modern, there was Little Red Riding Hood along with the Three Little Pigs, Wimpy Kid (from Diary of a Wimpy Kid) and Where’s Wally to name a few, all spotted among the crowd.
Former Punchbowl Public School student and now author Robert Vescio entertained the students who eagerly lined up for his autograph.
He fondly recalled memories of his time as a student there, helping to rekindle the reading bug among the next generation of lifelong readers.
They most connected with Robert’s book ‘The Voyage’, illustrated by Andrea Edmonds, about a refugee family setting out on a journey into the unknown.
Year 5 student Binna said: “I learnt that material things can be replaced, like a new home, but family can never be replaced.”
Meanwhile Greenacre Public School students celebrated Book Week by bringing to life story characters through costumes and art.
Students from Kindergarten to Year 2 enjoyed a book parade, dressing up as their favourite characters, while students from Years 3 to 6, got creative with their choice from the CBCA-shortlisted books and designed displays using their book as inspiration.
