Loved Grandmere turning 100

WIDOWED at age 36 with seven children under 15, Marthe Chasle struggled in her native Mauritius until deciding to join her brother and two older children in Australia with her younger ones in tow, two months before she turned 50.

That was just over 50 years ago and Mrs Chasle will celebrate her 100th birthday at Beechwood Nursing Home in Revesby on February 27.
Grandson Shane Merry said his grandmother happily settled in Campsie where she lived along with family at Roselands until moving to Panania four years ago.
At Revesby for the last two years, Mrs Chasle now has 16 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.
“She’s never worked but her philosophy has always been to look after the grandkids so the kids can work and create a better life,” Shane said.
“Grandmere (French for grandma) took us to school everyday and made sure there was always food on the table; she is the most amazing cook.
“She loves the freedom we have in Australia and how lucky we are having such a reliable political system; I think she still finds the cold a challenge, though, since in Mauritius there is only spring and summer.
“She also loves playing bingo but hates people making noise and taking her money.”
Never drinking or smoking and keeping out of the sun, Mrs Chasle puts her young-looking face down to the fact she only washes it in warm water.
“Grandmere was always very active too; she used to walk everywhere and prefers to eat fresh food which she grew up with in Mauritius since there was no refrigeration,” Shane said.
