Local Ambos now stars of TV show

GIVING viewers a taste of life as a medical emergency worker, popular Channel Ten TV show ‘Ambulance Australia’ is starring two Bankstown superstation NSW Ambulance officers – Fabian Perez and Sooaad Dahoud.

As the pair fight to save lives in this factual series, cameras capture unguarded moments of compassion, giving insight into the daily lives of our local emergency heroes.
Fabian said that from the traditional emergency response, through to connecting patients who do not need an emergency response with the most appropriate health provider, NSW Ambulance makes sure patients get the right care, at the right time, at the right place.
He said it was confronting being under the microscope for the three months of filming but it became natural after a while.
“The only bad moment was having to doing hair every morning for the cameras,” he said with a laugh.
“The series is done really well and shows the reality of what we do.
“It’s a way improve community relations, to break down barriers and show the interactions between patients and paramedics.
“I’ve even had a few nannas recognise me on the street saying they’ve ‘seen me in their lounge room’.”
Sooaad said they felt lucky to be given the filming opportunity.
“Fab’s been learning some Arabic phrases that he implemented during patient interactions,” she said.
“To see peoples’ faces light up when he referred to them as aunty and uncle, and when he used Arabic phrases, albeit sometimes incorrectly, highlighted how important it is to be inclusive and how a little effort goes a long way when someone is not well and working in a multicultural community such as Bankstown.”
Saying she hoped the show would encourage more people to join NSW Ambulance, Sooaad added: “If your passion is helping people of all ages and backgrounds, then pursuing a career in paramedicine is the way to go.”
