Live broadcasts in parks to cheer on Matildas in Womens World Cup

THE Matildas’ battle to become World Champions will be screened for all to see and cheer them on, with some matches to be broadcast live in at least three local parks.

Canterbury Bankstown Council will be working with football associations and groups to host the live screenings and associated activities, and has offered $3,000 for each of the three events to help with costs.
Cr Jessie Nguyen, who proposed the idea, said she was “super excited” about the Women’s World Cup and watching the Matildas compete against the best in the world.
“Considering we are hosting it in our backyard, it’s a good opportunity to get people together and celebrate,” she said.
“It should be spectacular, I’m so excited, can’t wait to watch.
“It will be a real cracker.”
The FIFA Women’s World Cup is the pinnacle of the sport and will see 32 teams compete across 64 matches during July and August with 11 games in Sydney, including a Semi Final and Final.
Cr Nguyen said that in 2022, the Socceroos were cheered on at a live outdoor public screening of the game at Beaman Park, and “while we may not come away with a win, it was the positive spirit of the crowd that really mattered”.
“Now with the Women’s World Cup here, it is again an opportunity for our fans to bring out their green and gold to cheer on the Matildas,” she said.
The Matildas kick off their campaign against the Republic of Ireland at Accor Stadium, Sydney Olympic Park, on July 20.
Bankstown District Amateur Football Association has already begun planning its live site at Padstow Park on July 31, 4.30-10.30pm, when the Matildas take on Canada. Food and activities will also be available.
