You could become a true local hero by volunteering as a driver for Little Wings, an incredible organisation that provides vital transport services for seriously ill children living in rural and regional NSW, who require medical appointments in Sydney.
Volunteer drivers pick up the family from Bankstown Airport and drive them to their Sydney hospital appointment, with driver Jeff Palmer saying being a driver has been one of the most rewarding experiences of his life.
The retired school teacher and Padstow resident says he started volunteering over six years ago and as the service grows so does their need for more drivers.
“I lived in the country for a while and I understand the difficulty in accessing specialist medical care as most country hospitals are just nursing stations,” he said.
“I have a chat along the drive with the families and some of them I’ve gotten to know very well; one little boy who had a bone marrow transplant last year had 14 return flights with Little Wings and I was his driver from Bankstown to hospital and back again.”
Jeff said he would definitely encourage others to get involved.
“If you’ve got some spare time but don’t want to drive, there’s other ways you can help like at barbecues and fundraisers,” he said.
“I do all the driver induction training with you so you know exactly where at the hospitals to drop off and pick up so why not give it a go?”
