Lidcombe Waratahs win Minor Premiership’s oldest silverware

AUSTRALIA’S oldest active soccer football silverware has been won by Lidcombe Waratahs after playing in the Granville & Districts Soccer Football Association’s Premier competition, X League 1.

Teams have been competing for the historic Challenge Shield since 1901 and in recent years, it is the Minor Premiers who are awarded the Shield.
Lidcombe Waratah Club President Michael Kush said it’s been a hard fought competition playing against some high quality teams.
He said that after 14 rounds, however, it was Lidcombe who had the best record sitting on top of the competition table, just one point more than Regents Park Saints and Granville Kewpies.
“It went down to the wire and I’m very proud of the team,” he said.
“It’s a very special achievement to win the shield.
“The lads are new to the club, but they honoured our club colours with their skill and sportsmanship, playing a brand of football that is very enjoyable to watch.”
Team Captain Mun-Soo Gil said they were very happy to have their names on the beautiful shield.
“But our work is not yet finished, we still have to win the finals,” he said.
The semi-finals are now underway, with all invited to cheer on the local players in the Grand Final which will be played at Melita Stadium on Saturday, September 7.
