WITH less than 1,000 votes the difference in the official count, the Liberals remain hopeful of claiming the hotly contested seat of East Hills for first time candidate Wendy Lindsay.

Less than 1,000 votes the difference between top two with 4,000 still to be counted

WITH less than 1,000 votes the difference in the official count, the Liberals remain hopeful of claiming the hotly contested seat of East Hills for first time candidate Wendy Lindsay.

A NSW Liberal Party spokesperson said it was “a very close race” in East Hills.

“While we are optimistic Wendy Lindsay will be successful, the NSW Liberal Party will wait for the remaining votes to be counted,” she said.

However Labor’s Cameron Murphy isn’t conceding just yet.

“Yes, we are behind, but there are still about 4,000 votes out there to be counted,” he said.

“I owe it to the electors of East Hills to make sure every one of those votes is counted.

“It is frustrating, that’s the problem when it’s incredibly close like this, it’s a bit of a roller-coaster.”

It isn’t the first time Mr Murphy has had an ‘edge of the seat’ wait for a result with his previous attempt in 2015, also coming down to a few hundred votes.

Mr Murphy said he was pleased by the strength of his local campaign this time around, but admitted he felt let down by Labor’s central campaign adding that there was no doubt it had faltered in the final week of campaigning.

He also noted the impact of having five minor parties or independents all running on what he described as “left of centre” policies.

“If any single one of those minor parties hadn’t run, then I think there would have been a very strong result for Labor,” he said.

However he said with the margins so close, any single factor could be the difference when it comes to determining the final result.
