The Bankstown South Infants School student had won the school and local network competition rounds before being selected to represent Bankstown in the Grand Final at Oatley Public School.
Assistant Principal Laura Osman said Lia competed against the best 14 other stage one students (seven to eight years) from across Sydney South.
“Lia’s prepared speech was about poetry and in the impromptu section, she had five minutes to prepare a speech entitled ‘One Small Step’,” she said.
“Lia was amazing, so creative and engaging and really deserved the win.
“She won two trophies, one to keep, and the perpetual one which will have her name engraved on before it goes to next year’s winner.
“The whole school community congratulates Lia, we are very proud of her.”
Lia wins public speaking championship
SHE’S rarely at a loss for words and that skill and confidence has now paid off for eight-year-old Lia Azzam who has won the 2023 School Performance South Primary Schools Public Speaking Championship.
