Latest win keeping Swifts’ second spot

THE NSW Swifts have continued their winning start to the 2019 Suncorp Super Netball season, downing last year’s Grand Finalists West Coast Fever 80-66 at Sydney Olympic Park’s Quaycentre.

The win keeps the Swifts in second place on the competition ladder after three rounds, one point behind the Melbourne Vixens, who are also unbeaten but have an extra bonus point to their name.
With the Swifts having won two from two going into Round 3, and the Fever yet to register a win, both teams had plenty on the line.
The opening minutes of the contest went goal-for-goal, with the two sides trying to break away but failing to do so early on. The score was 13-all when the first time-out was called 12 minutes in and in those last few minutes of the quarter the Swifts threw away two balls.
That put the visitors ahead by four at quarter-time and they had the game’s first bonus point in the bag. The Swifts looked unsettled early in the second quarter, which Fever capitalised on to jump ahead by six, and it took a few minutes for the home side to find their rhythm.
However, eventually they delivered, forcing back-to-back turnovers to put them within two goals of their opponents.
The intensity in the second half lifted but the Swifts were a much more settled Swifts side after the halftime pep talk.
They held control over much of the remaining game, with Fever making unforced errors. The Swifts converted almost all of their centre passes and held defensive pressure in the midcourt and goal circle.
Giants Netball have secured their first victory of the competition in a thrilling win over Collingwood Magpies Netball. The home team rallied from a small one-point deficit after the first quarter to surge home and down the Magpies 58-50 by the end of the fourth.
