Knit Wits crafting up ways to bring warmth to battlers

CREATING the fabric of a supportive community, developing skills and having fun at the same time, a group of about 20 women and men have been called ‘Knitting Angels’ but prefer to be known as the ’Knit Wits’.

Getting together every Saturday from 10.30am-12.30pm at Chester Hill Library, the group includes knitting teachers Marilyn Amesbury and Peggy Simpson who have been helping them create a range of woollen delights for local charities for about the last 12 years.
“We make rugs, scarves, gloves, bears, beanies, slippers and jumpers,” Marilyn said.
“We must thank our volunteer Brian for his recent donation of cash for us to stock up on our wool and also to Evald who has been with us for many years donating wool, needles and best of all, great company.”
Donating items to many charities over the years, including the Salvation Army, The Smith Family, Westmead Children’s Hospital, Yellow Umbrella, Helping Hands and more, the group are now firm friends and say they feel lucky to be doing something creative while helping others.
“We have a great time together every week; sometimes we don’t get much knitting done because we’re all talking and laughing so much,” Marilyn said.
“Newcomers are more than welcome to join our family of ‘Knit Wits’ and of course, we always appreciate any donation of wool, needles and patterns or cash to buy wool.”
