Junior bowlers now among best in NSW

MAKING their mark on the bowling world, eight young bowlers from Club Merrylands are now officially among the State’s best.

Achieving four, top three placings, Peytan Bunn, Tom Rich, Sam Rich, Reaghan Bunn, Joel Bullivant, Sophie Payne, Katie Astley and Lily Kirk (pictured) travelled to Warilla for the NSW U18s Championships for five long days on the green, playing various disciplines of singles, pairs and fours.
Tom Rich was most successful, achieving runner-up in the U18 Boys Singles and Lily Kirk came runner-up in the U15 Girls Singles.
Club Merrylands Bowls Development Coordinator Gavin Holburn said that as a result of their performances, six of the players were named in the Bowls NSW representative squads.
“The five girls then played in the Sydney West Schools Championships and all five were selected in the sides to compete at two NSW Combined High Schools Championships played in different formats,” he said.
“Bowls is a game for all ages and abilities. With concerns over head injuries, more families are turning to the sport of bowls.
“All of the Merrylands juniors play in open age group events, and all have won events at the highest levels of the club and above, with nearly all of them also playing in events with their parents and grandparents.”
Anyone, of any age, interested in having a go can register for free Saturday morning coaching. To find out more, call Holburn on 9682 8018 or clubmerrylands.com.au
