Mayor Khal Asfour said it was a pleasure to drop in and wish her a Happy Birthday, with a special delivery on behalf of the City.
“But that doesn’t beat the certificate she showed me, which she received from the Queen the day Her Majesty passed away,” Mayor Asfour said.
“Joan’s been in hospital with a case of pneumonia, but she’s regaining her strength and it was all smiles as she celebrated her special day.”
Joan’s daughter June Ormston said she was thrilled to receive her card on Thursday, September 8, just hours before the Queen passed away.
“When I gave the card to mum she said it was lovely and she felt lucky to now have three cards from the Queen after receiving the first one when she turned 100 and the second when she turned 105,” June said.
“She probably is one of the last people to receive a card from the Queen so feels very privileged and we are extremely grateful; we were up until 2am yesterday watching Her Majesty’s magnificent send-off on TV.”
‘Oldest resident’ could be last to hear from Queen
BELIEVED to be Canterbury Bankstown’s oldest resident, Joan Grainger is celebrating her 106th birthday with her loved ones at Bankstown-Lidcombe hospital and is likely one of the last centenarians to receive best birthday wishes from Queen Elizabeth II.
