Invite youth to weekly drop-in for fun, friends, learn new skill

YOUTH drop-in centres can claim numerous positive outcomes for tweens and teens who can develop better social and life skills, become leaders, gain greater knowledge of themselves and foster lifelong relationships.

Youth workers at Guildford Community Centre offer a a drop-in program every Thursday, 3-6pm, for those aged 12 to 18 years. It’s a safe place where they can hang out to chat to youth workers and make new friends in the local area, breaking down isolation.
Youth worker Erick Elefante said it’s the engagement, rapport and trust developed between young people and the youth workers that leads to young people “opening up” about help they might need with in their lives, with services and programs ready to support them.
“We invite more young people to come along and enjoy the benefits,” he said.
Resources available at Guildford, include a table tennis table and pool table supplied by Cumberland Council and play stations supplied by Cumberland Multicultural Community Services.
Among the young people attending last week, there were many positive comments, including from Najeeb (13): “It’s a good community and lots of friends being made here.”
Ali Reza (13): “I like coming to drop-In since playing ping pong is fun.”
Samuel (15): “Hahano the youth worker is funny and I like the play station and the air-conditioning.”
