Named after the club’s logo, the Turtle Swim has been held every year for the past 30, according to club registrar and treasurer Terry Gainey, and is a great opportunity to test your speed in the water.
“We’d like to challenge all registered Masters Swimming in Australia (MSA) members, anyone can register over the age of 18, to take part and you can do so anywhere in the world up until September 30,” he said.
“Your race needs to be timed by a member of MSA and you can swim in any stroke or in a relay team, with the entry fee of $15 and a surprise ‘Wests 500m Turtle Swim’ item and acknowledgement certificate as your reward.”
With the weekly group now meeting on Sundays from 9.30am at Birrong Leisure and Aquatic Centre, Mr Gainey says the MSA motto is ‘Fun, Fitness and Friendship’.
“I joined about 25 years ago and can thoroughly recommend swimming as a way to keep mentally and physically healthy,” he said.
“Our group is very sociable and we often have coffee or pizza together afterwards and sometimes barbecues.
“It makes it more interesting when you throw in a bit of competition or you race against the clock as in the Turtle Swim.”

Invite to splash out during club’s annual ‘Turtle Swim’
THEY might have had to switch training venues with the main pool at Ruth Everuss Aquatic Centre still closed, but that hasn’t stopped a dozen Wests Auburn Masters swimmers from splashing up a storm in preparation for their annual 5,000m ‘Turtle Swim’.
