Calling for expressions of interest for the proposed work, Mayor Greg Cummings said the Centre would be the centrepiece of the council’s community infrastructure and service a large footprint both culturally and socially.
Due for completion in 2020, the $22 million state-of-the-art facility will include an art gallery, library, community centre, new pool entry and multi-sports courts.
“This community landmark needs to feature the prominent role Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and art plays through our local government area,” Cr Cummings said.
“We want to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and celebrate their work by embracing, nurturing and preserving creative talent and diversity in creative community hubs.
“For this to happen we need to hear from artists in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island community.”
