Hunting for unsung hero in ‘Philips Sports Dad of Year’

LIDCOMBE’S Soliola family (pictured) was in high spirits last week after Bill and Sana and nine children travelled to GIO Stadium in Canberra to cheer on eldest daughter Monalisa, who scored the winning try for the Canberra Raiders against competition favourites Roosters.

This was ahead of Sunday’s 28-22 victory against ladder leaders Wests Tigers in which she also scored a try and helped set up another three.
Playing in the inaugural Raiders NRLW side, she is wearing the No 11 jersey which will stay with her for life – Monalisa’s Uncle Sia is Raiders NRL player No 326.
A previous winner of the Philips Community Sports Dad of the Year for which 2023 nominations have just opened, Bill said he was thrilled for Monalisa and her success but really missed her as his backup on the field in community sport.
“I have six kids playing at St Johns Eagles JRLFC and two volunteering along with my wife Sana,” he said.
“It was the best feeling winning the Philips competition a couple of years back and being able to support my playing club, the Berala Bears; it’s great to recognise dads but all the volunteering I do is for my own enjoyment, it feels so good helping out where I can.
“Families are super busy, but a little help I can give here and there, to help other families enjoy rugby league, respectfully far outweighs the accolade of winning an award.
“But I encourage everyone to nominate someone for this year’s Philips Community Sport Dad of the Year competition, it really does uplift you and your footy community and helps your club and yourself with great prizes on offer.”
