Hundreds enjoy school’s first community Iftar event

DESCRIBED as spectacular and a highlight of term 1, Berala Public School has hosted its first ever community Iftar, with Sheikh Wessam Charkawi leading the breaking of the fast.

Thanks to $2,000 in sponsorship provided by Human Appeal and other funds coming from the school and its P&C, the 416 attendees enjoyed a free meal and also used the occasion to celebrate the school’s 100th anniversary and their multicultural success with students coming from over 35 cultural backgrounds.
Deputy Principal Ashleigh Davis said the response was incredible.
“We were looking for a way to increase our community engagement and noticed other schools holding Iftar events so we approached our P&C to come up with a date that would suit the Ramadan calendar and it was decided to be held on March 27,” she said.
“Zena Debaja attended as our director and families not only included children from Kindergarten to Year 6 but also older, high school siblings.
“It was such a nice night and we’re already looking forward to next year which we hope will be even bigger and better.”
