Easily one of the oldest forms of hunting dating back thousands of years, spearfishing is fast growing in popularity as more and more people realise the great natural resource they live close to and the fun they can have while also scoring a fresh meal.
A family-friendly sport, Revesby Workers’ Spearfishing Club chief Troy Lilliendal says the club has been around since the mid 70s at a time when petrol was sold by the gallon, fish weighed by the pound and a chicko roll still tasted good.
“That was when a chook raffle was a big thing to win and the Revesby Workers’ was a modest affair, far from the five-star luxury it is today.
“But as the saying goes, the more things change the more they stay the same,” he said.
“We still have our meetings at the club, generally every second Wednesday of the month and still dive in the Taylor Shield once a month at great locations from Eden to Cronulla, with the majority of diving between Wollongong and Jervis Bay.”
Membership is spread between Narooma to Sydney, with ages from 13 to 70s, competing monthly, with prize money up for grabs.
“If you’re looking for a dive partner to hook up with, join our club and meet like-minded people,” Troy said.
“Interests of members include scuba diving, surfing, underwater photographer, hunting and four-wheel driving.
“Our community of passionate fishermen has had a tough few years with Covid and then 18 months of rain but we’re looking forward to a nice dry summer and good ocean conditions.”
