How Men’s Shed keeps you young

EAST Hills Men’s Shed members have been working overtime to produce a new line of items as well manning fundraising barbecues and supporting schools, nursing homes and the elderly with their repair and maintenance skills.

As the group celebrated Men’s Shed Week earlier this month (September 3-9), President Brian Barrett said “retirement” at 80 was one of the busiest times in his life but wouldn’t have it any other way.
“Being a Men’s Shed member definitely keeps you young and it’s great knowing that you’re not on the ‘scrap heap’ but very useful,” he said.
Open for work and shoppers on Mondays and Tuesdays, 9am-3pm, Brian said each day was different and they had the capacity to tackle engineering, woodwork, stained glass, leather work and model-making projects.
“You might find yourself working on our new line of wooden-based, test-tube vases which are the perfect gift and come with lavender or a single rose,” he said.
“Another day, you could working on building a staircase or a wheelchair ramp, as we did last week, or repairing toys at a childcare centre.
“We also do a lot of repairing work in local nursing homes and the women’s refuge; it’s great to help out the woman and show them not all men are monsters.”
Extremely proactive in the community wherever they could help, Brian said they also welcomed men, referred via the hospital, who may be overcoming depression.
‘It’s a great feeling helping others, especially the vulnerable and all are invited to join us.”
