Hospital to be built over road from its current site

THE new $1.3 billion Bankstown Hospital will be built in Eldridge Road across the road from the existing site, if the Liberals retain power at the March election. Premier Dominic Perrottet, joined State MP for East Hills, Wendy Lindsay, Canterbury Bankstown Councillor George Zakhia and residents for the announcement last Friday afternoon.

THE location of Bankstown’s new $1.3 billion hospital has been surrounded by controversy but the search is over and it will be built on Eldridge Road across from the existing site, if the Liberals are re-elected.
The State Government said the site was selected following an exhaustive search of 38 possible locations and will give residents the optimal healthcare experience.
The hospital will include expanded emergency services, surgery and interventional procedures, intensive care, women’s and children’s health, Community Health Services, Aged health, Mental health, Cancer services, Ambulatory care services, Rehabilitation and 1,750 parking spaces.
State MP for East Hills, Wendy Lindsay, welcomed the news, which she said “was the result of tireless advocacy to construct the hospital in the determined location, rather than move it away from the community it currently serves”.
“This will create a broader health precinct, providing a one-stop-shop for the community’s health needs. The current hospital will be retained as a public health facility while constructing the new hospital just across the road,” Ms Lindsay said.
“In 2020, while future site selection was underway, we delivered an expanded $25 million Emergency Department in the existing Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital. We are now cracking on with delivery of the full $1.3 billion redevelopment for this community.”
Mayor Khal Asfour was pushing for the hospital to be built in the CBD, saying the Liberals’ proposed site was a former toxic dump (which takes in Bankstown Sporting Complex) and is dangerous and not fit for a hospital.
State MP for Bankstown, Tania Mihailuk, said the announcement is a huge win for commonsense and the entire Bankstown community who will now be able to access the health care services that they deserve without become stuck in the gridlocked Bankstown CBD.
“As the Bankstown MP, who gave birth to my children at Bankstown Hospital, I know just how important it is to our community to have a new world class and easily accessible hospital,” she said.
