Hornets win grand final third year in row

THEIR numbers may be small but their sting is massive and was definitely on show when the Padstow Hornets Premier League first grade team won their grand final for the third year in a row last Saturday.

Competing in the Bankstown District Amateur Football Association (BDAFA) competition and beating Revesby Workers’ to take home the top honours, the first grade team as well as the reserve grade team were minor premiers, losing just one game all season.
“This was a huge achievement considering our club is so small compared with some of the others,” Hornets General Manager Greg Peddie said.
“Some of our players have been together for years, with one of the players chalking up 25 years with the Hornets.
“Not only that, in one of the games we had four brothers playing – Brendan, Michael, Daniel and Matt Cklamovski – and three sets of two brothers – Neil and Nick Philippou, Angus and Harley Munro and Lachie and Ryan Bateman.
“So to say we are a family-friendly club is an understatement.
“These guys all live and breathe for the game and their club.
“Man of the Match in the grand final, who also won the Golden Boot for the most amount of tries all season, was Neil Philippou.”
Peddie said it also ‘spoke volumes’ about the players’ connection and bond when he saw first grade players turn up to cheer up the Over 45s match and other teams cheering on the girls and younger players in their games.
“We are all very proud of what the club has achieved and every year we look out how we can keep getting better and better,” Peddie added.
“We will have a rest now until pre-season training gets underway in December, with registrations open in January.”
