Honouring brave in style after full services return

IT’S been called ‘our most sacred day’ and this year will seem more special than ever after ANZAC Day ceremonies took a hit in the previous two years over the pandemic.

Thrilled to be able to pay proper tribute to the ANZACs this year, Cumberland RSL Sub-branch members have plans to honour their fallen comrades in style.
The Sub-branch’s Kate Howarth says there will be not one but two services this year.
The first will be the dawn service at Auburn Memorial Park (car Rawson St and Station Rd) from 5.30am followed by a free breakfast for service-goers (who must display their armband to get in) at Granville Diggers.
The second will be at Davey Square Reserve in Strathfield at 10am.
“We haven’t limited the numbers this year as we can safely accommodate 100 so you don’t need to book,” Kate said.
“All of our members are thrilled that ANZAC Day is back and we can all get together in a fair dinkum way and remember those who lived and died for our country.”
Merrylands RSL Sub-branch President Rob Grimley says they were looking forward to a big turnout for the march and dawn service.
“We meet for the march at Merrylands RSL at 5.15am, ending at Charles Mance Reserve for a full service with two big screens this year,” he said.
“The service will be followed by a free hot breakfast at the club for service-goers and then some of us may go into the city to march.”
Two-Up will be on offer on ANZAC Day, Monday, April 25, at the club but not across the whole of the ANZAC Day long weekend.
“Traditionally it’s only played on ANZAC Day and we’re sticking to that,” a club spokesperson said.
Mayor Lisa Lake is encouraging everyone to attend one of the services, and help “commemorate the service men and women who fought so bravely for our freedom in this great country and to pay tribute to our fallen heroes as a community”.
