Homeowners, renovators be warned

MANY homes in Cumberland built before 1990 will contain asbestos.

This is a dangerous mineral that was added to many building materials because it helped to strengthen them, as well as provide other benefits including improved insulation and heat-resistance.
Asbestos poses a risk to your health if the tiny fibres are inhaled so keep your home well maintained and managing risk during home renovations is essential.
This November – Asbestos Awareness Month – Cumberland Council is providing free services to increase awareness of the dangers of asbestos among homeowners and renovators.
As well as being able to book a free household asbestos collection at any time this month so long as the material is separate from the dwelling and not associated with renovation or repair work, you can also book for a free household inspection this Saturday, November 19 (your house must be built before 1990 and mostly in original condition) as well as attend a free online asbestos info session and learn safety tips on Saturday, November 26, 11am-1pm.
