Holdup with weapon rise

Plus car theft, shoplifting

THE latest crime data is mostly good news for Cumberland residents.
Figures released by the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOSCAR), showed falls in eight of the 17 major crime categories and rises of less than 10 per cent in six others in the 12 months to September 2018, compared with the same period for 2019.
However one category of concern is the number of robberies involving a weapon other than a firearm which more than doubled from 22 offences reported in 2018, to 50 until September this year.
Over that period there were just a dozen robberies with a firearm, up by just one on the previous 12 months, but there was some good news with the number of robberies without a weapon dropping by 26 per cent, from 77 to 57.
The other bad news was an 18 per cent in the number of motor vehicle thefts reported, rising from 387 over 12 months to September 2018, compared with 412 in 2019.
One category in Cumberland in line with the statewide trend, was theft from retail stores, which was up nine per cent locally compared with eight per cent across the State.
NSW Police Commissioner, Michael Fuller welcomed the statewide figures which showed the rate of crime across most of NSW, had remained stable or fallen over the last two years.
“These figures demonstrate how proactive policing continues to have a positive impact on reducing crime across the state,” he said.
“Police have a range of capabilities available to them that are used to stay ahead of criminals planning to commit these crimes.”
